Ball peins are good for metal work , like beating and shaping metal or beating the shit out of a stubborn bearing that the puller can’t get to.
Working as a factory maintenance-mechanic my goto hammers are a 4lb sledge, 3lb drilling hammer, 12,24, & 32oz ball peens and a dead blow. It’s like with wrenches , sure an adjustable wrench/crescent will work for removing bolts but there are better tools for the task like a real wrench or ratchet & socket.
My Dad had a axe that had a hammer head on one side. It was Probably 30 oz hammer . He hit everything with it. Except that time He knock out the horse after it ran off with me in the saddle 
. God rest his soul I imagine if that hammer/axe would have been readily available ol’ Prince would have been galloping in that big pasture in the sky.
