I believe that story as well around here foxes are curious and thieves and he ain’t the first hunter to fall asleep and harvest the bestest of the season
My whitetail hunting memories are mostly about just enjoying time in the woods. One comes to mind. I bowhunt with traditional recurves, wood shafts and one-piece broadheads (currently using Mowoc Dots made in 1960.). Anyway, I had a favorite blowdown that was at the head of a ravine and I got myself in an hour before sunrise (back when I was eager and ambitious). This was on 3,000 acres owned by a furniture company that allowed no tree-stands, motorized vehicles or fires. Heaven.
As the sun rose and light began to filter into the woods I was scanning for any movement. the woods were mostly silent. About 10 minutes after “legal” sunrise I looked around and got “the whillies”. Something felt wrong. I made another sweep with my eyes and THE TREE 10 FEET AWAY FROM MY LEFT SHOULDER HAD YELLOW EYES!
I near filled my camo pants!
A grey owl was sitting on a branch about eight feet off the ground watching me. Talk about an adrenaline rush. After about 10 or 15 minutes it flew off. Absolutely silently. I really enjoy encountering owls. That one was a real rush!
I dont think it would have went over too well if he would have hooted real loud…
Rule #1 when a long ways from home bring an extra pair of Draws
Often used to describe the older and wiser among us. It may have Been Belt-Fed hooting in the forest
About 20 years ago. A buddy and I are hunting a little streach of woods along a river. We are sitting on top of a levie about 20 feet above the level of the flat along the river. A 10 point buck is walking down the trail. I get my buddies attention and point out the deer. At about 40 yards his 12 gauge goes boom. I see where he hit the deer behind the rib cage. I already had my Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 up and pointed at the trail.
My buddy shoots again at the running deer and misses. As the buck goes by me I shoot it through the shoulders and it piles up.
My buddy looks at me real weired and says " You shot my deer. At a dead run. With a handgun"
We had a good hunt and the deer didnt get away. It was headed for a 6 acre weed field we had lost a deer in during bow season.
Thats a cool story . I havent tried one on the run . If they was moving I always waited for that hesitation or stop even snort wheezed at them or bleeted at them to get them to stop. I dont know if I consider myself quite that good… i did shoot one on the run with a 300winmag when I was about 20yrs.old. but not a Revolver. i did an European mount on it .
If he didnt shoot i was going to make a noise so he would stop when the buck cleared a tree beside the trail. Once the buck was shot he wasnt going to stop for anything. So it was shoot him or chase a badly shot deer into a big weed field. It was only about a 20 yard shot when he got to me. I have shot 4 deer through the shoulder with my 454. They dont go anywhere.
I can surely attest to that. I shot a buck that was very very slowly walking up a quasi small bank somewhat of a grade . Was about 35 yards. I shot right after he gave me a clear line of sight and he stepped forward one more prance stepped back one and fell over. .454 is a Deerhammer !! That was with a .454 also. Pretty sure I was shooting a beartooth 300grain bullet with 28.5grains of H110
Which should tell him a lot about you too
I took a friend deer hunting once and only once to my sweet spot for deer well he caught buck fever and he decided it was a good idea to take a shot at a running deer with his 30-06, well after 2 misses he hit it with a texas shot, never ever again have I ever taken him again
The ol" Texas Hole Shot … EWWW gross !!!
