That is for the magnetic thermometer. It would melt if I stuck it right on the barrel.

Back to the range with the 45-70. Trying to get a handle on the Soule aperture sights from Montana Vintage Arms I installed a while back. Loaded some easier shooting loads, getting tired of getting beat to hell when I pull the bang switch.

Been really trying to get an understanding of exactly how to use the aperture sights and combine with a ballistic calculator.

So Observation 1: Sight radius 36-1/4”. I’m calling that 1 yard. Vernier rear sight is calibrated at 100 to the inch, 20 lines @ 0.5” to the inch. That makes it pretty easy, 1/100th of an inch @ 1 yard =1” @ 100 yards. 2” @ 200yards.

Observation 2: Vernier scale breaks the 0.05” increments into 0.01”

So put that into the ballistic calculator, measured the front sight height and used that for the scope height, found a bullet similar to the Laser Cast for BC, from memory put in 1300fps. target at 200 yards. Calculator showed 13moa drop. Fired a group, hit a good 6” low.

Got out the LabRadar, hell, 1024fps, not 1300. The old, alcohol soaked brain cells can’t be relied on for velocity data anymore. Put that in the calculator 19 moa drop, not 13. Dialed that up, misread the scale, couple inches high. Readjusted, threw in a little windage, 3rd and last group pretty close.

405gr Oregon Trail Laser Cast bullets over 13gr of Trail Boss. I could easily shoot these with no hearing protection. Sounds like a pellet rifle.

200 yard target. I think someone with better eyes could do some good work with these sights.

Morning gents :hot_beverage: , as a matter of fact, I have invited several real gun guys to join. One of them I have real hope he actually will at some point, a neighbor on my street. I’m going to put up an invite on the board at my gun club when I go next time as well.

We can create special/dedicated categories for local clubs to use for communication/promotion etc.

All of us need to figure out how to make this thing work, what we want of it and how to voice it’s implementation.

We’re not alone, I’m part of other local groups that seem to fall short on comms, for some reason we all just assume things will get done :man_shrugging:

but, good job!

The trouble I find is the commitment, the follow through. How many people who may own a gun or many guns will actively join a group who actively espouse gun ownership, responsibilty, etc. Not many I’ve found. Or, like one I invited who works in security and carries shy’s away from any politics or discussions involving strong opinions of any kind.

My neighbor is the only person ( and his family ) who I actually think will commit at some point. I’ve talked to my darling about joining and maybe starting a “ ladies who shoot, carry concealed, own guns “ category. We could call it the “ thorny rose :rose:” or pistol packing mama’s category or something like that. I’ll work on the nabe’s wife, she is quite outspoken and conservative.

We are not an ordinary group of gun owners, we are not constrained as so many others are. Let’s hope that the next 3 years free’s more of us to express ourselves. :us_outlying_islands:
