The Remington copy of the A5 had a checkered band about 6" around the barrel to grip so you could do that.

That probably was slightly better but still see huge problems, even with a good grip sometimes you slip . It would take a good since of situational awareness to always be mindful of whee the barrel is pointed 
just in case of a slip even with narling or checkering .

Cutts compensator . I have an old 870 with one .

Yep a cutts, those four are all from the 40’s and 50’s. i think one of them is unfired.
