Rifle Cartridge Chart: Quickly Compare Rifle Cartridge Sizes (2026)

I’m a visual learner. Seeing the size differences between rifle cartridges has helped me keep them somewhat straight in my mind (at least the ones I commonly use). The following chart shows the sizes of familiar (and not-so-familiar) rifle calibers and cartridges.

Rifle Caliber/Cartridge Chart

The team at Ammo.com has created this chart to help you visualize rifle cartridge sizes relative to rounds you’re already familiar with. For an in-depth look at common cartridge ballistics, don’t miss all of our ballistics tables. If you’re more concerned with how much each cartridge kicks, we also have you covered with our recoil charts.

Handgun and shotgun rounds are covered separately in our ammo size chart, and if you are matching a cartridge to an animal rather than to a rifle, our hunting caliber chart sorts the options by game.

Tap or click any column heading to sort the chart. Always check your local regulations.

Wow, I had no idea .17 WSM was so cheap! I might have to buy/build a rifle for that!

The .17 WSM is a fun little round — flat-shooting and cheap enough to plink all day. Just keep in mind the ammo savings can disappear fast if you get into a rifle that eats it, and the rimfire case means you’re not going to reload it.

If you’re looking to build, the Ruger American Rimfire in .17 WSM is a solid, budget-friendly option that won’t break the bank.

Yeah, I just now figured out that it is rimfire. Based on the name I was thinking it was a centerfire.

I get it now. As a rimfire, I’m not interested. .22 S-L-LR, WRF and WMR cover all the bases for rimfire, for me.
