Most Popular Guns in the U.S.: The Must-Have Guns in 2024

Report Highlights: The U.S. has millions of firearms, but only a few withstand the test of time, are still available today, and have many variants.

  • The AK-47 is the most widely owned firearm globally, though it’s relatively hard to find in the U.S.
  • Glock handguns and AR-15 rifles have sold more variants than any other firearms on the market.
  • 1911 pistols and the Remington 870 shotgun are the longest-running firearms still in production today.
  • The SIG P365 and Smith & Wesson M&P Shield are newer models, but they’ve already sold millions in just a few years.

Methodology

Identifying the most popular guns in the U.S. is challenging. We decided to outline why these firearms are the best guns in the U.S.

Here is our methodology for choosing the most popular guns:

  1. Top-Selling: The top-selling guns for each decade made our list.
  2. The longest-running models: Some firearms have withstood the test of time, while others fizzled out quickly.
  3. Top-Rated: We’ve included guns that were highly rated, reviewed, and recommended by experts, enthusiasts, and gun owners.
  4. New and Improved: Although we focus on longest-running models, we don’t want to exclude newer models that shooters love. That’s why we’re including some new models that are highly rated and have the best sales.
  5. Firearms You Can Purchase Today: Sadly, some of the best firearms aren’t easily available to the general public (we love you, Thompson submachine gun), so we’ll include the ones you can still buy.

Note: The number of firearms sold and manufactured are not tracked in the U.S. We’ve used the most recent estimates in our tables below.

That’s almost arguable

But what I find confusing is

Popularity should be volume overall short of individual owners having a bulk which is likely not a factor, so #2 10/22 should never trump #'s 3&4, then #1 has the added comment of

Which doesn’t fit with most popular.

For what its worth my opinion is the AR15 wins popularity as its modular, practically a lego rifle and that adds to customization which people love to do, and the price/reliability of Glocks I’d think make them #2

I can understand the AK being the Volkswagen, stamped receivers fire when dirty but who wants a Volkswagen these days?

I’d personally rearrange
AR15
Glock
1911

and then think hard about which .357 comes in at #4

I agree with the poll. It said GLOBALLY. the AK47 is the most popular gun GLOBALLY. not here. the AK47 is not available here. these knockoff semi auto replicas are NOT AK47’s. A Kalashnikov AK47 is a fully automatic weapon.

But then i seen the chart and it says most popular in the US and has it listed first which is total BS.

I guess I better quit calling my AK47’s AK47’s

Good idea, want some suggestions on what to call them?

I’ve had a few, never a fan, paid 150.00 for my first one at a pawn shop, don’t figure it was a deal either, after that I acquired a couple in trades but never kept any long

All my AK pattern guns work and shoot just fine.

I am a fan of anything as reliable as an AK.
Have a couple, love them.

Calling the AKs we have access to AK47s would be like calling your AR-15 an M4 or M16 ,Although something like the Colt 6920 is pretty much an M4 with no giggle switch IIRC they came off the same line even. Some of Arsenals AKs are like that as well so I mean …meh…who gives a crap? We are talking about trashcan guns chambered in commie rounds. Belt Fed probably owns a few crates of all the guns mentioned.

As much as I don’t like the banana mags I get the rounds should be less likely to seize in the chamber , not that I’m aware of that being an issue so often it would win me over on its own, I used to knock the rock-in mags but since I like the FAL… :face_with_peeking_eye:

I can still knock the right side charge though, FAL is left

Aside from that, 4 bolt main feature  , and they’re both looking good (no drippy tar appearance) what makes them well built?

Any trigger improvements?
