Nope a chemical process.
I don’t like peas and carrots either, but it sounded cool when Forrest Gump said it.
Media blast with 120 aluminum oxide after degreasing, then into a mix of manganese phosphate and hot water basically. bubbles for a while about 10-15 min then wash off with lots of water. At that point you can soak in any light oil or post parkerizing solution, or on to Cerakote.
So its chemical etching in a way
How do you guys find out how to do all this stuff
Now the cerekote .. what kind of a sprayer do I need . And does it have to be oven dried ? Or air dried ?
Has anyone ever tried to dip gun parts in cerekote. ??
Its more like a type of rust then etching.
The tooth from the AlOx media blasting gives it a lot of suface area to hold oil or cerakote.
No dipping.
Most types need oven but there is C Series that is air dry.
High quality lphv 0.08 tip.
Super dry air. (Same for media blaster) I run a cheap oil/water, a nice coalesing filter, after that a dessicant filter.
There use to be a master smith on the full 30, he mentored me a lot.
Guy on the 1911 forum helped me with the parkerizing and cerakote over parkerizing process. Just got to ask a lot of questions and not be afraid to screw stuff up.
@albroswift another question is cerakote a one layer application or do you do more than one coat ??
One coat for 1 color.
Between less then a half mil and a mill + depending on the product.
If you want masking/stencils flash each coat for 15-20 minutes at around 180F and it is hard enough to apply/peal high temp masking but will still accept more coats. After full cure can’t apply anymore.
