Administrative Note: The information above comes from the manufacturers. Actual ballistics obtained with your firearm can vary considerably from advertised ballistics. Ballistic performance can also vary lot to lot, even with the same brand and label. When manufacturer ballistic data was unavailable, ballistics were calculated using a ballistics calculator.

Lots of interesting data here.

I take away a couple things. MOST of the 9’s run <1200 FPS at the muzzle. That drops off pretty quickly. I was an ED MD for 43 years, and I worked in some fairly busy ED’s, with reasonably active knife-and-gun clubs. Trauma surgeons just didn’t get much worked up over GSW’s with pistol-calibre firearms. It really takes a rifle calibre to inflict serious damage. Pistols are merely “convenient” - they aren’t nearly the killers Hollywood makes them out to be. Almost no one is taken out with one shot - of anything. And 9 is the least impressive of the lot. You can look at all the gel you want - it ain’t a live person. Live people react differently to being shot. So to MY mind, a 9 is barely capable, and not much difference today in modern .380 vs 9 (95 gr bullet @ 1050 FPS vs 115 pr 124 (better) gr at 1100-1150 FPS. Those are all in the same ballpark. You know this because MOST modern .380’s are locked-breech barrels. That leads to easier racking of slide (women) and a safer gun to shoot modern defensive ammo.

I hate to guess as that can go wrong, so whats an ED?

ED - the common medical reference to Emergency Department.

Thanks, 43 years, no small thing, with all your gun knowledge I’d of not guessed that

If you hang around the right guys and you love guns, the knowledge comes easily. I had a friend who has unfortunately died, but he was a machinist. Had a Bridgeport in his basement. He was famous in the Chicagoland area for making some of THE BEST DRAG MOTORS. Got interested in shooting and became a great gunsmith. I learned a boatload from him. Plus I worked a lot of years as a locums in Evansville, IN and hung around with another jarhead. He, too, was a “gun nut”, so we wandered around to gun shops in KY, IN, and even once in OH. Great old times!

My friend Eddie got into gun smithing by accident. He decided to start shooting bullseye and bought himself a Springfield 1911. Got to looking at it and decided, “I can do better than this.” So he fired up his Bridgeport and went to town on the 1911. Next match he shows up for, he cleans up. The other guys on the team are asking did he buy a new gun.
“Naw! I just fixed a few things in my old gun.”
“?Can you do it for mine.”
“Sure, I guess so.”
And so a gunsmith was born. He could diagnose a gun’s problem and fix it where others didn’t have a clue. I had a pair of Pieta Navy 36’s in sequrntial numbes. I had them converted by a guy up in WI with basically a Richards-Mason modification so they could shoot .38 Long Colt. Trry find brass for that sucker. Ended up loading .38 Spl cases lite with a 104 gr FT bullet. But the guns would only shoot maybe 2 loads and lock up. Turns out a “tuner” cut the barrels back and the guns would no longer seal on the barrel mouth like they are suppose to. Eddie figured out what was wrong, had a thin, thin bead of weld on the tops of each barrel, then filed them until he had the correct front shake when the hammer was cocked. Then he had to ream the cylinders to accept the case rims deeper so head space could be maintained off the back wall of the frame. Guns now work great. They are the ones on my avatar.

pffft

I could of done all that

?You that good a welder. ‘Cuz at the time it was kind of avant guard kind of stuff. The weld is small enough not to encroach on the barrel opening, covers an arc of maybe 120 degrees of the top of the barrel. Both guns. I am presuming you know what end shake is and how cap ‘n ball six guns lock up, so I won’t explain all that.

pffft, me and JB are the reason guns can even lock up in the first place
