Gun ownership in America is widespread, but the reasons for owning firearms vary based on factors like race, age, and gender. The following sections examine various reports and surveys to provide accurate and well-rounded insights.
We cross-referenced the latest studies and surveys to deliver reliable information. However, self-reported surveys may not fully capture the views of every individual within each demographic.
Why Do Americans Own Guns?
Americans cite five primary reasons for owning a gun:
Protection
Hunting
Sport Shooting
Collecting
Work
The majority (72%) name protection as their main reason, while 19% consider it a secondary reason. Only 9% of Americans state that protection is not a reason for owning a firearm. 1
Americans aged 35 to 64 are most likely to own guns for home protection (92.5%), while those aged 18 to 34 are more likely to own guns for protection outside the home (89.1%).
Individuals aged 18 to 34 are less likely than older age groups to own firearms for recreational purposes (84.5%). 88.4% of those aged 35 to 64 are more likely to own them for recreational and sporting purposes.
Americans over 35 are more likely to own guns for hunting. 74.5% of Americans aged 35 to 64 own firearms for hunting compared to individuals aged 18 to 34 (69.8%).
Protection and recreational use are the two most common reasons for owning a gun among all age groups.
I believe the basic reason for gun ownership is protection. Many legitimate home defense shootings go unreported by mainstream media. Nobody, not even the criminal wants to die. Fear of dying is the only effective deterrence in today’s legal environment. A firearm competently wielded levels the playing field, especially if one understands that your firearm is only used for deadly intent.
I would link sport and collecting together. One must be proficient with your gun, and having multiple firearms allows options for defense, and collectors value if thats your thing. Even a peashooter 5.56 will defend in a pinch.
Lastly, hunting. Hank Williams Jr put it nicely. Country boys can survive, a rifle(s), shotgun(s), etc. will put meat on the table and take out anyone with ill intent.
If you prepare yourself, and have the means, a gun is one facet of a necessary self defense and survival strategy.
In fact I would argue that fear is the motivating factor for gun ownership. It is the basis for most of our motivations to succeed. Fear and pain are linked, you cannot hide from either. I trust pain, it does not lie.
The article labels fear of those with opposing viewpoints at protests, etc. as an ideological reason. It’s interesting to note that the situations when they expect a need for protection are different from the typical white person, but fundamentally those reasons are still for protection.
I suppose wanting guns for protection at the synagogue and for protection from Antifa, Jihadi, Black Hebrew Israelite and neo-Nazi violence like I do, being a Jew, would also count as “ideological” according to ammo.com.
As likely all are, those who would claim hunting, merely wish to have protection from hunger, enjoy sports, IDPA/USPSA etc, protection from being outdone by other shooters, collectors, protection from a declining dollar , and in the end
Is just a fancy speak saying owning guns is just a damn good idea
