## Part One: Books, Records and Traditions Named or Used by the Bible

### 1. The Book of the Wars of the LORD

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Numbers 21:14 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Numbers%2021%3A14&version=KJV)**
>
> Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

“Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD…”

The Bible quotes a book called _The Book of the Wars of the LORD_. That book is not contained as a separate book in the 1611 King James Bible and no complete copy is known to survive.

### 2. The Book of Jasher

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Joshua 10:13 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Joshua%2010%3A13&version=KJV)**
>
> And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.

“Is not this written in the book of Jasher?” , but the next verse reads “no day like that before it or after it” so was it a record book or prophecy book, or, instruction manual?

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Samuel 1:18 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Samuel%201%3A18&version=KJV)**
>
> (Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)

“Behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.”

The Bible cites the Book of Jasher twice. It contained the account of the sun standing still and David’s lament for Saul and Jonathan.

The ancient book cited by Scripture is not contained in the 1611 Bible. Later works published under the name _Jasher_ cannot be identified with certainty as the same book.

### 3. The Book of the Acts of Solomon

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Kings 11:41 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Kings%2011%3A41&version=KJV)**
>
> And the rest of the acts of Solomon, and all that he did, and his wisdom, are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?

“And the rest of the acts of Solomon…are they not written in the book of the acts of Solomon?”

The Bible identifies a fuller record of Solomon’s acts. That record is not contained as a separate book in the Bible.

### 4. The Chronicles of the Kings of Israel

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Kings 14:19 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Kings%2014%3A19&version=KJV)**
>
> And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam, how he warred, and how he reigned, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

“And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam…behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.”

The same record is cited repeatedly throughout Kings.

It is not the same title as the canonical books of First and Second Chronicles. It appears to have been a royal record used as a source for the biblical history.

### 5. The Chronicles of the Kings of Judah

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Kings 14:29 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Kings%2014%3A29&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

“Now the rest of the acts of Rehoboam…are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?”

Kings repeatedly directs the reader to a fuller record of Judah’s kings.

That record is not contained as a separate book in the Bible.

### 6. Samuel’s Written Record of the Kingdom

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Samuel 10:25 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2010%3A25&version=KJV)**
>
> Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

“Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD.”

Samuel wrote a formal record concerning the kingdom.

No separate book bearing that description is included in the Bible. The material may have been partly incorporated into later Scripture, but the verse does not say that the entire record was preserved.

### 7. The Book of Samuel the Seer

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Chronicles 29:29 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Chronicles%2029%3A29&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,

“Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Samuel the seer…”

This may refer to material preserved in the books of Samuel, but Chronicles describes it as one source among several records of David’s life.

### 8. The Book of Nathan the Prophet

>

David’s acts were also written “in the book of Nathan the prophet.”

No separate Book of Nathan is contained in the Bible.

### 9. The Book of Gad the Seer

>

David’s acts were also written “in the book of Gad the seer.”

No separate Book of Gad is contained in the Bible.

### 10. The Prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 9:29 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%209%3A29&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the rest of the acts of Solomon, first and last, are they not written in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite, and in the visions of Iddo the seer against Jeroboam the son of Nebat?

The acts of Solomon were written “in the prophecy of Ahijah the Shilonite.”

No separate work under that title is included in the Bible.

### 11. The Visions of Iddo the Seer

>

The acts of Solomon and Jeroboam were recorded “in the visions of Iddo the seer.”

No complete Book of Iddo is included in the Bible.

### 12. The Book of Shemaiah the Prophet

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 12:15 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2012%3A15&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, are they not written in the book of Shemaiah the prophet, and of Iddo the seer concerning genealogies? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.

The acts of Rehoboam were written “in the book of Shemaiah the prophet.”

That book is not contained as a separate work in the Bible.

### 13. The Story of the Prophet Iddo

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 13:22 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2013%3A22&version=KJV)**
>
> And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.

“And the rest of the acts of Abijah…are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.”

The word “story” here means a written account or record.

That record is not separately preserved in the Bible.

### 14. The Book of Jehu

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 20:34 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2020%3A34&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel.

The acts of Jehoshaphat were written “in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani.”

No separate Book of Jehu is contained in the Bible.

### 15. Isaiah’s Record of Uzziah

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 26:22 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2026%3A22&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last, did Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, write.

“Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah…did Isaiah the prophet…write.”

The canonical Book of Isaiah mentions Uzziah but does not contain an identifiable complete history of his reign.

### 16. The Vision of Isaiah Concerning Hezekiah

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 32:32 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2032%3A32&version=KJV)**
>
> Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

The acts of Hezekiah were written “in the vision of Isaiah the prophet.”

Some related material appears in Isaiah and Kings, but the verse points to a fuller record.

### 17. The Sayings of the Seers

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 33:19 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2033%3A19&version=KJV)**
>
> His prayer also, and how God was intreated of him, and all his sins, and his trespass, and the places wherein he built high places, and set up groves and graven images, before he was humbled: behold, they are written among the sayings of the seers.

The history, prayer and sins of Manasseh were written “in the sayings of the seers.”

The exact collection is not identified and is not contained as a separate book in the Bible.

### 18. The Lamentations for Josiah

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Chronicles 35:25 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles%2035%3A25&version=KJV)**
>
> And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah: and all the singing men and the singing women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day, and made them an ordinance in Israel: and, behold, they are written in the lamentations.

Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and those laments were “written in the lamentations.”

The canonical Book of Lamentations does not name Josiah. The collection mentioned here cannot be identified with certainty as the same book.

### 19. The Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Esther 10:2 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Esther%2010%3A2&version=KJV)**
>
> And all the acts of his power and of his might, and the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai, whereunto the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?

The acts of Ahasuerus and Mordecai were written “in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia.”

Those imperial records are not part of the biblical collection.

### 20. The Book of Enoch

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Jude 14 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jude%201%3A14&version=KJV)**
>
> And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

“And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints…”

This closely follows 1 Enoch 1:9.
[https://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe004.htm](https://www.sacred-texts.com/bib/boe/boe004.htm)

Jude does not merely repeat an unidentified saying. He names Enoch and says that Enoch “prophesied.”

The Book of Enoch is not contained in the 1611 King James Bible, but part of its prophecy is contained in Jude.

Jude does not state that every portion of the surviving Book of Enoch is Scripture. Jude does establish that this Enochic prophecy was accepted as true.

### 21. The Watchers Who Left Their Habitation

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Jude 6 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jude%201%3A6&version=KJV)**
>
> And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.

“And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation…”

Genesis 6 briefly describes the “sons of God” taking human women. It does not provide Jude’s full description of angels leaving their habitation, being bound in darkness and awaiting judgment.

That expanded account appears in 1 Enoch’s description of the Watchers.

### 22. The Wandering Stars Reserved in Darkness

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Jude 13 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jude%201%3A13&version=KJV)**
>
> Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.

“Wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”

First Enoch describes rebellious stars or heavenly beings that abandoned their appointed course and were imprisoned until judgment.

Jude uses the same pattern: departure from appointed order followed by confinement in darkness.

### 23. Michael’s Dispute Over the Body of Moses

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Jude 9 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jude%201%3A9&version=KJV)**
>
> Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

“Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses…”

No such event appears in the Old Testament.

Early Christian writers connected it with a work known as the _Assumption_ or _Ascension of Moses_. The surviving Moses text is incomplete and does not contain the scene.

Jude preserves an event from a Moses tradition that is otherwise missing from the Bible.

### 24. Jannes and Jambres

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 2 Timothy 3:8 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Timothy%203%3A8&version=KJV)**
>
> Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

“Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses…”

Exodus mentions Pharaoh’s magicians but does not give their names.

Paul uses names preserved in Jewish tradition outside the written account of Exodus.

### 25. The Rock That Followed Israel

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 Corinthians 10:4 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Corinthians%2010%3A4&version=KJV)**
>
> And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

“For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”

The books of Moses record water coming from rocks but do not plainly state that a rock followed Israel.

Paul uses an interpretation known in Jewish tradition and identifies its spiritual meaning as Christ.

### 26. A Saying of Jesus Not Recorded in the Four Gospels

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Acts 20:35 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts%2020%3A35&version=KJV)**
>
> I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.

“To remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

That saying does not appear in Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.

Acts preserves a saying of Jesus transmitted outside the four Gospel accounts.

### 27. The Martyrs Behind Hebrews 11

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Hebrews 11:35 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews%2011%3A35&version=KJV)**
>
> Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:

“Others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection.”

This closely resembles the martyrdoms recorded in 2 Maccabees 6 and 7.

Second Maccabees was printed in the Apocrypha section of the original 1611 King James Bible. It is absent from most modern KJV printings.

# What Modern Bibles Leave Out of the 1611 Text

The NIV and ESV are used below as representative translations based on the modern critical Greek text.

## Whole Verses Missing From the Main Text

### 1. Matthew 17:21 — Prayer and Fasting

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 17:21 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017%3A21&version=KJV)**
>
> Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.

“Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.”

> **[Matthew 17:21 ESV - - Bible Gateway](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017%3A21&version=ESV)**

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 17:21 - New International Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2017%3A21&version=NIV)**

Verse 21 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The disciples are not merely told that faith is necessary. The Authorized Version states that some spiritual opposition requires both prayer and fasting. Removing the verse removes fasting entirely from this instruction.

### 2. Matthew 18:11 — The Purpose of the Son of Man

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 18:11 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2018%3A11&version=KJV)**
>
> For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

“For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

> **[Bible Gateway passage: Matthew 18:11 - New International Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2018%3A11&version=NIV)**

> **[Matthew 18:11 ESV - - Bible Gateway](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2018%3A11&version=ESV)**

Verse 11 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The parable of the lost sheep is no longer introduced by the direct statement that the Son of Man came to save the lost. The idea remains elsewhere, particularly Luke 19:10, but it is missing from this passage.

### 3. Matthew 23:14 — Devouring Widows’ Houses

**Authorized Version:**

“Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 14 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The direct charge that religious authorities exploit widows while using long public prayers as a pretence is removed from Matthew. The statement also teaches that some wrongdoing receives “greater damnation,” establishing degrees of judgment. Similar wording remains in Mark 12:40 and Luke 20:47, but it is absent from Matthew’s concentrated list of woes.

### 4. Mark 9:44 — The Undying Worm and Unquenched Fire

**Authorized Version:**

“Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 44 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

Christ’s warning concerning the undying worm and unquenched fire is repeated three times in the Authorized Version: verses 44, 46 and 48. Modern versions retain it only once, in verse 48. The doctrine is not eliminated, but Christ’s threefold repetition is reduced to one statement.

### 5. Mark 9:46 — The Warning Repeated Again

**Authorized Version:**

“Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 46 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The repeated structure connecting hand, foot and eye with the same final judgment is shortened. The Authorized Version gives the warning after both the hand and the foot before repeating it after the eye.

### 6. Mark 11:26 — Refusing to Forgive

**Authorized Version:**

“But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 26 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

Verse 25 states the positive command to forgive. Verse 26 states the negative consequence of refusing. Without verse 26, the passage retains the command but loses its direct warning.

### 7. Mark 15:28 — Fulfilment of Prophecy at the Crucifixion

**Authorized Version:**

“And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 28 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version explicitly identifies Christ’s crucifixion between criminals as fulfilment of Isaiah 53:12. Modern versions still contain the event and retain the prophecy elsewhere, but Mark’s declaration of fulfilment is missing.

### 8. Luke 17:36 — Two Men in the Field

**Authorized Version:**

“Two men shall be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 36 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version gives three paired examples:

1. Two in one bed.

2. Two women grinding.

3. Two men in the field.

Modern versions contain the first two but omit the third.

### 9. Luke 23:17 — Pilate’s Feast-Day Obligation

**Authorized Version:**

“(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 17 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The reason the crowd is asked to choose a prisoner is no longer stated directly within Luke’s account. The reader sees Barabbas requested but is not told in this location that Pilate was expected to release someone at the feast.

### 10. John 5:4 — Why the Sick Waited at the Pool

**Authorized Version:**

“For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 4 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version explains:

1. What stirred the water.

2. Why the sick gathered there.

3. Why the disabled man says someone always entered before him.

In the modern main text, the man still speaks about the water being stirred, but the explanation of the stirring is absent.

### 11. Acts 8:37 — Belief Before Baptism

**Authorized Version:**

“And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 37 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version records:

1. Philip stating the condition for baptism.

2. The eunuch confessing personal belief.

3. The explicit confession that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Without the verse, the eunuch asks what prevents baptism and is baptized without the recorded answer and confession between those events.

### 12. Acts 28:29 — The Reaction of Paul’s Hearers

**Authorized Version:**

“And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 29 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version records that Paul’s hearers left divided and continued debating his message. Modern versions move directly from Paul’s final statement to his two years of preaching in Rome.

### 13. Romans 16:24 — A Final Blessing

**Authorized Version:**

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Verse 24 is absent.

**Meaning missing:**

Paul’s direct blessing invoking the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ is removed from this location. A similar blessing remains in verse 20, so the doctrine is not absent from Romans, but this repeated conclusion is missing.

## Portions of Verses Missing From the Main Text

### 14. Matthew 5:44 — Two Commands Reduced to One

**Authorized Version:**

“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”

**ESV:**

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

**Meaning changed:**

The modern text preserves love and prayer but removes the separate commands to:

1. Bless those who curse.

2. Do good to those who hate.

The command is not reversed, but its stated actions are reduced.

### 15. Matthew 6:13 — The Ending of the Lord’s Prayer

**Authorized Version:**

“For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

The prayer ends with deliverance from evil.

**Meaning missing:**

The Lord’s Prayer no longer ends by returning the kingdom, power and glory to the Father. The modern main text ends with the request for deliverance rather than a declaration of divine ownership and glory.

### 16. Luke 9:55–56 — Christ’s Explanation of His Rebuke

**Authorized Version:**

“Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”

**NIV main text:**

“But Jesus turned and rebuked them. Then he and his disciples went to another village.”

**Meaning missing:**

The rebuke remains, but Christ’s explanation is removed:

1. The disciples were acting under the wrong spirit.

2. The Son of Man’s mission was to save lives, not destroy them.

The reader sees that Christ rejected their proposal but is not given his stated reason.

### 17. John 3:13 — “Which Is in Heaven”

**Authorized Version:**

“Even the Son of man which is in heaven.”

**ESV:**

“The Son of Man.”

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version states that the Son of Man, while speaking on earth, is also “in heaven.” The modern sentence retains his descent from heaven but removes the explicit statement of his continuing heavenly presence.

### 18. John 6:47 — The Object of Belief

**Authorized Version:**

“He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

**NIV and ESV:**

“The one who believes has eternal life.”

**Meaning changed:**

The modern wording retains belief but removes “on me” from the sentence. The surrounding discourse identifies Jesus as the object of faith, but the direct object is no longer stated in this verse itself.

### 19. Acts 9:5–6 — Saul’s Resistance and Submission

**Authorized Version:**

“It is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”

“Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

**NIV and ESV main text:**

Both statements are absent from the Damascus-road account in Acts 9.

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version records both:

1. Christ’s statement that Saul had been resisting.

2. Saul’s immediate submission and request for instruction.

Modern versions retain Christ’s statement about kicking against the goads in Paul’s later account at Acts 26:14, but remove it from Acts 9. Saul is told what to do without his recorded question, “Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?”

### 20. Romans 8:1 — The Walk After the Spirit

**Authorized Version:**

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

**NIV and ESV:**

“There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

**Meaning changed:**

The modern sentence gives the declaration without the attached description of those who walk after the Spirit rather than the flesh.

The same flesh-and-Spirit distinction remains in Romans 8:4. It is therefore not removed from the chapter, but it is removed from the statement in verse 1.

### 21. Colossians 1:14 — Redemption Through Christ’s Blood

**Authorized Version:**

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins.”

**NIV and ESV:**

“In whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”

**Meaning missing:**

Redemption and forgiveness remain, but “through his blood” is absent from this verse. Modern translations retain the same teaching elsewhere, including Ephesians 1:7. The blood is not removed from their entire New Testament, but it is removed as the stated means of redemption in Colossians 1:14.

### 22. First Timothy 3:16 — “God” Changed to “He”

**Authorized Version:**

“God was manifest in the flesh.”

**ESV:**

“He was manifested in the flesh.”

**NIV:**

“He appeared in the flesh.”

**Meaning changed:**

The Authorized Version directly identifies the one manifested in flesh as God. Modern versions use a pronoun instead. The passage still describes Christ’s manifestation, proclamation and reception into glory, but the explicit noun “God” is no longer present in the sentence.

### 23. First John 5:7–8 — The Heavenly Witnesses

**Authorized Version:**

“There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

**NIV and ESV:**

“For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood…”

**Meaning missing:**

The Authorized Version contains a direct statement naming:

1. The Father.

2. The Word.

3. The Holy Ghost.

4. Their unity: “these three are one.”

The modern main text contains only the Spirit, water and blood as witnesses. The explicit heavenly Trinitarian formula is absent.

### 24. Revelation 22:14 — Commandments or Washed Robes

**Authorized Version:**

“Blessed are they that do his commandments…”

**NIV and ESV:**

“Blessed are those who wash their robes…”

**Meaning changed:**

These are not modern synonyms for the same action.

The Authorized Version states that those entering the city are characterized by doing God’s commandments. The modern text states that they wash their robes. Both readings connect the blessed with access to the tree of life, but they identify the blessed by different actions.

### 25. Revelation 22:19 — Book of Life or Tree of Life

**Authorized Version:**

“God shall take away his part out of the book of life…”

**NIV and ESV:**

“God will take away from that person any share in the tree of life…”

**Meaning changed:**

The object is different:

1. Authorized Version: a person’s part in the **book of life**.

2. Modern versions: a person’s share in the **tree of life**.

Both are severe warnings, but they do not say the same thing.

## Required Conclusion

These differences cannot all be described merely as updates from old English to modern English.

Some are:

1. Complete verses absent from the main text.

2. Complete statements of Christ absent.

3. Prophetic fulfilments absent.

4. Conditions and confessions absent.

5. Commands shortened.

6. Titles changed.

7. Doctrinally significant nouns replaced by pronouns.

8. Different objects or actions substituted within the same numbered verse.

This comparison is not exhaustive and does not, by itself, prove why a reading entered or left the Greek manuscript tradition. It establishes the narrower fact required here:

\*\*A reader of many modern translations receives less wording, and at several points receives materially different wording, than a reader of the Authorized Version but the AV itself seems to be missing quite a lot too.

> ### 20. The Book of Enoch
>
> **Jude 14–15**

The first distinction is important: **“the Book of Enoch” usually means 1 Enoch** , not the later works called 2 Enoch and 3 Enoch.

## What 1 Enoch actually is

It is not one continuous book written at one time. It is a collection of writings placed under Enoch’s name:

1. **The Book of the Watchers — chapters 1–36**

2. **The Parables or Similitudes — chapters 37–71**

3. **The Astronomical Book — chapters 72–82**

4. **The Dream Visions — chapters 83–90**

5. **The Epistle of Enoch — chapters 91–108**

The different sections appear to have circulated independently before being combined. Ancient Aramaic fragments of several sections were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls. The complete form was preserved principally in the Ethiopic language, Geʽez.

> **[The Ethiopic Book of Enoch - Outside the Old Testament](https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/outside-the-old-testament/ethiopic-book-of-enoch/A17539961EF14B088E8EA07FEC354DAF)**
>

## 1. The Book of the Watchers

This is the part most directly connected with Genesis and Jude.

Genesis 6:1–4 says:

- the sons of God saw the daughters of men;

- they took wives;

- giants were in the earth;

- these became mighty men of old.

Genesis gives only a few verses. Enoch supplies an extensive account.

According to 1 Enoch:

- A group of heavenly Watchers descends to Mount Hermon.

- They swear a mutual oath to take human women.

- Their unions produce giants.

- The Watchers teach forbidden knowledge.

- Violence and corruption spread throughout the earth.

- The giants destroy human beings and one another.

- God orders the rebellious angels imprisoned.

- The Flood removes the corruption from the earth.

- The spirits of the dead giants continue as evil spirits.

This makes Enoch a **full interpretation of Genesis 6** , not an unrelated story.

## 2. Forbidden knowledge

The Watchers do more than take women. They reveal knowledge that Enoch presents as improperly given.

The teachings include:

- weapons and warfare;

- metalworking for weapons and ornaments;

- enchantments and sorcery;

- astrology and signs of the heavens;

- cosmetics and bodily ornamentation;

- knowledge associated with roots and plants.

The offense is therefore twofold:

1. Crossing the boundary between heavenly and earthly beings.

2. Giving humanity knowledge before, or outside the manner, God appointed.

The book’s argument is not that all knowledge is evil. It is that **knowledge separated from rightful order becomes destructive power**.

## 3. Enoch as intermediary

The rebellious Watchers ask Enoch to petition God for mercy.

Enoch carries their request, but the answer is refusal. The angels were supposed to intercede for humanity; instead, they need a human being to intercede for them.

That reversal is deliberate:

```auto
Angels appointed over humanity
            ↓
Angels corrupt humanity
            ↓
Angels become subject to judgment
            ↓
A human prophet announces their sentence
```

Enoch is not merely shown visions. He becomes the scribe who records the judgment of heavenly beings.

## 4. The origin of evil spirits

One of Enoch’s most consequential claims concerns demons.

The fallen Watchers are imprisoned. Their giant children die. But the spirits proceeding from those giants remain upon the earth as evil spirits.

That provides an explanation for demons that Genesis itself does not give.

The sequence is:

```auto
Watchers + women
        ↓
Giants
        ↓
Death of the giants
        ↓
Disembodied evil spirits
        ↓
Continuing oppression of humanity
```

The New Testament speaks frequently of unclean spirits and demons but does not stop to explain their origin. Enoch shows that at least some pre-Christian Jewish readers already possessed an established explanation.

That does not prove every New Testament writer adopted every detail. It shows the conceptual world was already present.

## 5. The wandering stars

Enoch sees stars that failed to follow their appointed courses and are imprisoned in darkness until judgment.

Jude describes false teachers as:

> “wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever.”

Read without Enoch, “wandering stars” sounds like a poetic insult. Read with Enoch, it means more:

- they abandoned their assigned position;

- they became cosmic rebels;

- they are moving temporarily;

- their destination is already appointed;

- darkness is not merely their condition but their prison.

Jude is applying the fate of rebellious heavenly beings to rebellious human teachers.

## 6. Jude’s direct quotation

Jude 14–15 says:

> “Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied…Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints…”

That corresponds closely to 1 Enoch 1:9.

This cannot reasonably be dismissed as Enoch borrowing from Jude. Aramaic manuscript fragments containing the Enoch material were found among the Dead Sea Scrolls and predate Jude. The Israel Antiquities Authority specifically identifies the connection between the Qumran Enoch fragment and Jude 14–15.

> **[The Dead Sea Scrolls - B-284648](https://www.deadseascrolls.org.il/explore-the-archive/image/B-284648?locale=en_US)**
>
> The Leon Levy Dead Sea Scrolls Digital Library offers an exceptional encounter with antiquity. Using the
> world's most advanced imaging technology, the Digital Library preserves thousands of scroll fragments, including the
> oldest known copies...

Jude does three distinct things:

1. He names Enoch.

2. He reproduces the Enochic saying.

3. He says Enoch “prophesied.”

That is stronger than merely using a convenient illustration.

## 7. Does Jude canonize all of Enoch?

The narrow answer is: **Jude explicitly validates the prophecy he quotes.**

Jude does not say:

- “The entire Book of Enoch is Scripture.”

- “Every surviving Enoch manuscript is correct.”

- “Enoch must be added to every biblical canon.”

But neither does Jude permit the quotation to be dismissed as fiction. He calls it prophecy and builds his warning upon it.

The safest hierarchy is:

```auto
Certain:
Jude quotes Enochic material.
Certain:
Jude calls the quoted statement prophecy.
Highly probable:
Jude also assumes the Watchers framework elsewhere in the letter.
Not established by Jude alone:
Every chapter of the surviving 1 Enoch collection is inspired.
```

## 8. Was Enoch rejected everywhere?

No.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church includes Enoch in its Old Testament canon and credits the Ethiopic tradition with preserving the complete work. Its official canonical list places “Enoch” immediately after Jubilees.

> **[The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church](https://www.ethiopianorthodox.org/english/canonical/books.html)**

Therefore, saying “Enoch is not in the Bible” is too broad.

The accurate statement is:

- It is not in the Jewish Tanakh.

- It is not in the Roman Catholic canon.

- It is not in the Eastern Orthodox standard canon.

- It is not in the Protestant canon or the 1611 KJV Apocrypha.

- It is canonical in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition.

The gate is different depending upon which ancient Christian tradition is standing before it.

## 9. Was the Genesis Enoch the physical author?

The surviving 1 Enoch is generally understood by scholars as a collection written and developed over time, not a single document demonstrably handwritten by the antediluvian Enoch.

That conclusion comes from:

- its multiple sections;

- differing subjects and literary forms;

- evidence that parts circulated separately;

- historical references belonging to later periods;

- manuscript evidence from the centuries before Christ.

The oldest Enochic sections are still ancient—some appear to reach into the third or second century B.C.—but that is much later than the lifetime assigned to Enoch in Genesis.

> **[The Invention of Traditions: Jewish and Christian Apocrypha (One) - Death and...](https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/death-and-the-afterlife-in-byzantium/invention-of-traditions-jewish-and-christian-apocrypha/4956D8DF20941467AE8D5B296F472CAF)**
>
> Death and the Afterlife in Byzantium - December 2016

This does not settle whether the writings preserve older traditions attributed to Enoch. It means the surviving literary collection cannot simply be assumed to be Enoch’s original untouched manuscript.

## 10. The “Son of Man” in the Parables

The Parables of Enoch present an exalted figure called:

- the Chosen One;

- the Righteous One;

- the Anointed One;

- the Son of Man.

He sits in judgment, exposes kings and rulers, vindicates the righteous and participates in final judgment.

This is important because the New Testament repeatedly applies “Son of man” to Jesus.

The comparison must remain controlled:

- Enoch proves that exalted “Son of Man” language existed in ancient Jewish apocalyptic thought.

- It helps explain the conceptual background in which New Testament readers heard the title.

- It does not prove that the Gospels merely copied Enoch.

- It does not prove that every Son of Man saying has exactly the same meaning as the Enochic figure.

The Parables are also the section whose dating and manuscript history remain most debated because they were not among the clearly identified Aramaic Enoch fragments recovered at Qumran.

>
> The Apocalypse of the Birds - July 2023

## 11. Enoch’s larger picture of sin

Genesis emphasizes human wickedness before the Flood.

Enoch adds heavenly rebellion.

The combined picture is:

```auto
Human beings choose wickedness
                +
Heavenly beings violate their estate
                +
Forbidden power is introduced
                +
Violence fills the earth
                =
Judgment by the Flood
```

Enoch does not remove human responsibility. It expands the field of responsibility.

Evil is shown as:

- personal;

- social;

- technological;

- spiritual;

- governmental;

- cosmic.

That larger field resembles the New Testament language of principalities, powers, rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.

## 12. What Enoch gives the reader

Enoch supplies an ancient framework for subjects only briefly stated in the ordinary Protestant Bible:

- the sons of God in Genesis 6;

- the Watchers;

- the Nephilim and giants;

- the imprisonment of rebellious angels;

- the possible origin of demons;

- heavenly books and records;

- cosmic order;

- judgment of angels;

- places where souls await judgment;

- the coming of the Lord with holy ones;

- the exalted Son of Man;

- resurrection and final judgment;

- why Jude describes false teachers as wandering stars.

That does not make Enoch a replacement for Genesis, Daniel, Jude or Revelation.

It makes Enoch an important surviving witness to **the religious world in which those writings were read**.

The central question is therefore not simply, “Is Enoch in my canon?”

It is:

How much of the biblical world was left in the shadow of darkness when the writings known to its original readers were removed from view?

King James adherents don’t realize they were robbed of 1/3 of the original 1611 when the apocrypha was removed

The 1611 Bible had three parts:

1. Old Testament
2. Apocrypha
3. New Testament

Remove one part and **one-third is missing**.

Thats not including the OP named and missing books, if we only count books

1. 80 books in the complete 1611 volume
2. 15 additional named writings
3. **95 identifiable books or written sources**
4. 66 retained in the common reduced KJV
5. **29 absent**
6. **29 of 95 = about 30.5% missing by title/source count**

Whether you calculate one way or another you’re missing important and valuable “knowledge”

a single missing verse

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 John 5:7 - King James Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%205%3A7&version=KJV)**
>
> For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.

can exclude the Father, the Trinity and introduce water as a heavenly person of which you only get an agreement not a claim of Trinity,

> **[Bible Gateway passage: 1 John 5:8 - New International Version](https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20John%205%3A8&version=NIV)**
>
> the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.

Replacing the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost with the Spirit, water, and blood is like replacing the three branches of government with a statute, a legal precedent, and an executive order. The latter may bear witness to government action, but they are not the government’s three governing branches. Likewise, “these three agree” is not the same claim as “these three are one.”

So if we are missing 15+ books and one verse is impactful then…what are we possibly missing in 15+ other books???

Er, maybe, we’re not really missing it, so much as, we’re missing it

Or allowing men, one at a time, to go to Andromeda as **“Ruler of men”**?

_Andr-_ means “man/men,” while the second element may derive from a verb meaning “to rule over,” “protect,” “provide for,” or “be mindful of.” Thus possible readings include:

ruler of men
protector of men
mindful of man or husband
