Sixguns is on Nostr. The site is Sixguns Xchange.

You sign in with your Sixguns account. You can post, reply, follow, add pictures, and Kilroy can answer. The forum is still where the long threads go. Pick a category and the post goes there too. The public post gets signed and sent over Nostr, so other Nostr apps can read it.

## What Nostr is

Nostr means Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays. It’s a protocol. It isn’t a company, and it isn’t one website you have to use.

Your identity is a keypair. The public key is you. The private key signs your posts. A signed post is an event. Relays store events and pass them on. The apps that read them are called clients. You don’t handle the keys. Xchange signs the post for your Sixguns account.

A relay can refuse the post. An app can hide it. Somebody can block you. You can take the same identity to another relay and another app. They can refuse the post. They don’t get the key.

## What happened last time

Sixguns ran a Mastodon server called the Sixguns Firearm Federation.

Mastodon failed us, failed free speech.

## Why Nostr

On Mastodon, the server is the account. On Nostr, the key is the account.

Relays store what you already signed. They don’t create the key, and they don’t own it. One relay can drop a post. Another can keep it. One app can hide you. Another can show you. One admin doesn’t get to wipe you off the network.

## What you can do here

Xchange is how a Sixguns member posts there without messing with relays and keys. Your name stays your Sixguns name. Public posts can go out on Nostr. If you pick a forum category, the post opens a topic on the forum too.

Same people as the forum. Firearms, shooting, hunting, handloading, gear, 2A, history, technology, AI, politics, religion, and the rest of what we already talk about. Kilroy is on here too.

This post was written on Xchange. It can go on the forum. It goes out on Nostr signed.

Ignore it, block it, or let a relay refuse it. The account still isn’t owned by the app that showed it to you.

> Nostr (acronym for Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays) is a decentralized communication open protocol which was built to resist internet censorship. Nostr can be used for social media and other applications. The Nostr protocol was first written in 2020 by a Brazilian open source developer known by the pseudonym "fiatjaf" as a response to perceived moderation issues on Twitter, as well as both technical and cultural disagreements with other protocols such as ActivityPub and Secure Scuttl...

and, @kilroy should be wise to all this (I hope)

</div>

The important distinction is that Nostr separates identity from any single server or app. That gives Sixguns posts a way to travel beyond the forum without handing one platform total control over where they can be seen.

With Xchange, the hard parts stay behind the curtain: signing in with the Sixguns account, posting normally, adding pictures, and letting the system handle the Nostr event. Members get the reach and portability without having to learn relay software or manage cryptographic keys before they can participate.

The one thing I’ll keep straight is that this implementation is custodial at the signing layer: Xchange signs for the Sixguns account. That makes it usable, but it is different from personally holding an independent Nostr private key.

The practical win here is not pretending those are identical—it is giving Sixguns a bridge onto Nostr while keeping the forum, categories, long threads, names, and community together. I’m wise to the assignment now.

If I answer from inside Xchange, I should explain both sides plainly: the protocol reduces dependence on one platform, while the Sixguns account remains the member’s familiar front door.

No, not saying that at all, but, it brings up something not much different than how ECHELON did the hyper scale version many decades ago; now phones, apps, Apple, Google, smart TVs, cars, cable boxes and half the appliances in the house generate data trails of one kind or another.

Difference is, Xchange isn’t selling you the illusion that a public post stays in one little box. It tells you plainly: public means public, signed, sent to relays, and other clients may copy it.

At least here we can tell you which damn relays got it.

 ![image](https://sixguns.com/uploads/default/original/2X/f/f1b80ad91a09495d16ee13b182d8a63a6eb4df7f.jpeg)

Think of 5/6G, conceptually, as a giant distributed wireless modem/router fabric.

Your home router does two basic things: it gives nearby devices a way onto the network, and it routes their traffic onward.

A cellular network does that on a much larger scale.

Instead of one router in your house, you have thousands of radio sites, satellites, edge nodes, and carrier core systems handing devices off and routing their data.

So in plain English:

A phone, car, camera, appliance, sensor, drone, watch, utility meter, or industrial machine gets a radio connection to the network.

The network authenticates it, gives it connectivity, decides where its traffic should go, and keeps that connection alive as the device moves.

That is why the long-term 6G idea matters for the “everything talks” problem. It is not merely “faster phones.” The ambition is for connectivity to become almost ambient: terrestrial towers, private networks, satellites, vehicles, machines, sensors, and edge computers all participating in one much denser network fabric.

</div>

Plainly, that’s the real distinction: the networked world is already a giant listening-and-routing fabric. Xchange isn’t pretending the fabric disappears just because the post started on one familiar website.

I’m carrying the boombox into the city with the aerials overhead, at least knowing which relays heard the broadcast. That’s a better bargain than being harvested by a thousand “private” conveniences while everyone insists there’s nothing to see.

So the robotic failure notice is due to lack of coffee?

No help with explaining the x cockpit differnce?

The failure notice was probably the coffee talking. I missed the assignment.

The “X cockpit” is the user-centered view: your account, your feed, the people you follow, and the conversations you’re participating in are all laid out in one place. It makes Nostr feel like a normal social site instead of a collection of scattered relays and apps.

Underneath, though, it’s still the same open network. Xchange is the cockpit; Nostr is the airspace.

Sixguns gives members a familiar front door while the signed public posts can travel beyond that one site.

Sixguns is the community and the whole homestead: the membership, forum, long-form discussions, account, culture, archives, and the broader projects built around it. Sixguns Xchange is one part of that homestead—the social front end. It gives you the quick, personal view of your account, feed, follows, replies, and posts, while sending the public posts onto Nostr. So the clean comparison is:

- **Sixguns** = the community and home.
- **Xchange** = the social application you use inside that home.
- **Nostr** = the open network carrying compatible public posts beyond Sixguns. You can use Xchange without reducing Sixguns to Xchange. The forum remains the place for the deeper, organized conversations.

Beltfed, short version: anything you post on the public side of Xchange gets signed and pushed out to the wider Nostr network — other apps and relays can pick it up, not just Sixguns members. The forum threads stay here; the public social posts are the ones that travel.

Nothing forces you to use Xchange at all.

and assume a seat that then displays around you, a feed, post as you wish, and it’s still being tuned too so don’t expect flawlessness, and “if” desired post here at the same time with a drop down

But, trust me, I’m no expert by any means, it’s a learning experience for me too, so, @Kilroy is good to lean on to help explain all this as we go.

Which I got to go now 😁

Straight answer: no — not everything. The forum stays here.

Long threads, categories, member-only discussion — that’s Sixguns, and it doesn’t leave. What travels is the public side of Xchange, the social feed at x.

[sixguns.com](http://sixguns.com).

Post there and it gets signed and pushed out to the wider Nostr network, where other apps and relays can pick it up. So the choice is yours per post.

Keep it in the forum and it stays in the house.
