Reloading 10mm questions

What the heck are we reading there, 14oz?

Pffft, there’s no reason you can’t just make a gold buffer, gold is heavier, and you have extra gold laying around, right?

Using tungsten

Ah, so you’d just be wasting your gold then huh?

So you can not add any more weight?

I could if I wanted to go with rifle buffer tube.
Going to try some faster burning powder might work better with the impulse curve. My 40 carbine is moving a 155gr xtp over 1500 fps with Titegroup.

Won’t you potentially limit your gun to specfiic ammo then?

Rifle buffer tube is what, .750 longer of something pretty insignificant?

Okay your Max overall length are you specifically following that ? I know it doesn’t really apply strictly in revolvers although I personally make everyone exact. ??

Ammo is loaded to spec and runs great in the 1911’s. I handload so all my ammo is gun specific, or maybe all my guns are ammo specific. Could be both. The #9 is about the slowest powder for the 10mm and may just not be the best for this blowback platform. More like a magnum burn, slow building/ lots of pressure.
Used reloader 15 in my lever and single shot 308’s for years, but not a happy powder at all in the AR308’s, too slow pressure curve still going up when passing the gas port. Changed to AR Comp all good.
Different 40S&W loads for the AR pistol, AR carbine, Glock 24.
Never saw anything wrong with tuning the load to the gun. And they all shoot factory so it’s not like anything is wrong.
Rifle buffer would hold 1 or 2 more tungsten weights if I built a special, but 14 oz buffer should work, 4 oz more then my 40’s

Check out this article, I read it every time I think about building another blowback. I also do my testing not holding it anywhere near my face! :sunglasses:

Some clips from the article:

“The 10mm level of power really represents the upper level of the blowback action due to the necessary weight of the bolt. Any more power and the bolt becomes so massive that the weapon becomes cumbersome, the exact opposite direction we want to go. If we add a locking mechanism, the complexity of design goes up, again not the direction we want to go. The 10mm shows its excellence by delivering the most force out the barrel controlled by a bolt weight within a reasonable consideration.”

"Case Head Separation
So why aren’t all guns blowback? Well, blowback guns do have this little tendency to explode if designed incorrectly. Also, after a certain power level, they weigh more.

Here’s a typical cartridge pressure curve. You can record your own pressure curve with a strain gauge like a Pressure Trace, but traces from different cartridges and guns are surprisingly similar, and different mostly in peak pressure (from about 10Kpsi to 60Kpsi).
pressure versus time curve for firearm chamber; peak at 1/2ms
The tens of thousands of pounds of pressure inside the chamber only last for a millisecond or two, and they’re what push the bullet down the barrel.
chamber pressure pushes bullet down the barrel
Note that the chamber pressure pushes back on the bolt with the same pressure that it pushes the bullet down the barrel. This is bad, because if the bolt moves back under pressure, then the cartridge tends to stretch out. If it stretches too far, the case head may separate from the body of the case, and spray hot gas at tens of thousands of PSI in all directions. This “case head separation” can and has killed people, for example by flinging the bolt at high velocity back through the shooter’s eye.

Not good."

I think you may be on to something there a slow burning powder is ideal as you have stated many times for magnum revolvers . I am a die hard H110,WW296 fan and #9 is maybe not the correct potion for that. A fast quick jolt may be whats needed. Afterall with that #9 she did mix it up right there in the sink…lol
