I didn’t realize that they had closed. That was a good range, especially for pistols.
I usually go to one of two places. There’s a small range where one can shoot pistols easily. It is maybe 15 minutes from my house, up right near the junction of 635 & Plano. I will go there with my daughter for a quick shoot. She lives west and I south. The other place I go is Texas Gun Experience. It’s a yearly membership but you can shoot all you want - for “free”. It’s up in Grapevine, a bit of a haul for me, but they have nice pistol and rifle ranges. It’s a clean, neat place.
For training I go to Critical Defense Group. It’s out in the sticks. You get decent live fire training. Mac has been training Tier 1 SpecOps guys for a long time and is a good shooter and thinks through his tactical suggestions. Only issue I have is that he does not allow shoulder holsters on his range, and that’s what I wear the most - by far. So when I go I have to drag out my Milt Sparks holster and use that. It’s really fitted for a double stack pistol (229) but works adequately with my 220 SAS.
That’s good to know about ETTS. I didn’t know they have so may bays. The range in Terrell only has about 4 20-yard pistol bays. They’ve gotten way more into shooting clays with trap, skeet and sporting clay fields, which I’m sure is a lot of fun, but I’ve never shot clays before and only have pump actions. But if I were into shotgun clay shooting, I’d just join the club less than a mile from my house. They only offer clay shooting, though.
Yeah, I was disappointed when I found out they closed permanently. It was only 15-20 minutes away from me. Some housing developments had sprung up not too far from them. I’m wondering if that may have had something to do with it. I doubt they’d build housing on their property, though, with all the lead around there.
I definitely need more training. The training I got from the range I belong to didn’t allow shoulder holsters, either, but that was years ago. They haven’t offered any more training since then. Either way, if there’s a pistol bay open (there are only 4 I believe) you can shoot from any holster. You’re your own range master there.
You don’t need anything more than a good pump gun. But it does have to be pretty slick to reload and make the second shot. An auto loader would be preferable. Or a double-barrelled.
Man, I just hate when that happens. We had a range just over the border into Wisconsin that had everything. Then they started building “developments” near by - and then the developments started complaining about the range! Like they didn’t know it was there WAY before their home was built.
There was a hunting preserve a couple friends of mine belonged to (a bit too expensive for me). THEY were smart. They bought a LARGE piece of land, created their hunting preserve in. the middle, then created a “sanctuary” ring around the preserve, so no one could build near them. The sanctuary was protected by law. Clever.
Well, I would definitely recommend Mac at Critical Defense Group. But he’s out in Greenville, and that’s about an hour east of me, so a haul for you. He has a step system of training, so even though you’ve been shooting, you still start at Handgun 1, go to Handgun 2, then more advanced stuff. I know I learned a lot in Handgun 1, and I was skeptical it would be useful since I have shot for a long time. I have even purchased a day of training for me and the kids. Only my daughter was enthusiastic about going, but all admitted it was both useful and fun. My son-in-law, who had never fired a pistol until he met me, ended up with the fastest time holster to two hits on target at 7 yards. But then later he messed up, to be the ONLY ONE to shoot a hostage instead of the bad guy. We all laughed at that. Kind of an old IPSC target, only steel.
IF anyone is interested, I can put up his contact info, or you can goggle CDG.
I’m a member there, (Texas Gun Experience) was shooting a 454 with a 5” barrel. Range Officer came over to me and said I’d either have to keep the barrel down when I shot it or quit shooting it. It’s a single action, rolls in the hand. I just packed up and left, really ticked me off though after spending the money on a family membership there. If you’re not shooting a 9mm there, you’re fine.
Amazes me how little some of these “range officers” know about a variety of firearms.
Good Greif for reals that is ridiculous…idiot probably doesnt even know how to shot one.
There is no special qualification to be a range officer. At least in IPSC you had to complete a Range Officer course, so. you knew the rule book.
You should. have reeled in your target, showed him the holes, then asked just WHERE it was you were “shooting high”.
I’d of handed him the 454 and said show me what you are talking about. My Super redhawk is a handfull and it has a scope and 9 1/2" barrel.
my dear, you are a threat with a SA revolver kicking high aren’t you
I feel for you, people sure can ruin a nice time by speaking can’t they.
I was thinking the same thing - play dumb and ask him to show you how to do it.
