The word **meme** is not an acronym. It comes from the Greek _mimema_, meaning “something imitated,” and was coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book _The Selfish Gene_. Just as genes pass along biological information, memes spread ideas, behaviors, and cultural information through imitation. An internet meme is simply the digital version: an image, video, phrase, or idea that spreads online as individuals share, imitate, and modify it.
