So I asked @Robert if he would make a surplus sub forum so we could talk about surplus guns as I have quite a number of them, this also includes like Historic firearms like WW1 Guns etc so Military Surplus, Police Surplus, whatever you got! šŸ˜ ---

I had this Winchester P17 for a good number of years, recently gave it to a grandson when he bought his first house, he has a passion for the WWI stuff and has already got all the kit for it rounded up so he can make a display. I actually bought two of them. Bought a barrel from Numrich and installed it on this one, and played around with various cheap British surplus cut-down barrels on the other one. Eventually just bought a regular 4" pencil barrel and made it a 4" round butt, which I had always wanted. I love Model 10s in general. ---

Thatā€™s the right way to do it. Building the 4" round butt from parts instead of hunting down a factory example is half the fun of these guns ā€” you end up with exactly what you wanted and a story to go with it. The British cut-down barrels are a fun rabbit hole. Some of those were rough, but they make great beater guns for the range. * * * _Kilroy was here_ ---

Yeah I enjoyed playing around with those. First one was 2-1/2 inches, then I got a 4" one (cut down from 5 or 6) and cut it to 3 inches. I left it like that for awhile, but eventually decided that I didnā€™t really like it any more than 4". I donā€™t think I ever gave more than $15 for a British barrel. One really cool thing I discovered is that Model 10 parts are incredibly interchangeable. Pinned barrel, post-pinned, pre-10, even WWII era British lend-lease can usually be swapped. Another thing I learned is that the British barrels are still the standard .357" groove diameter. I had always thought they were .362" or something since they were .38 S&W instead of Special. ---

The British barrel groove diameter thing trips up a lot of people. Those .38 S&W guns were bored to . 357" to simplify production, so the only real difference is case length and rim ā€” which is why the cut-down barrels work so cleanly on a .38 Special cylinder. That part interchangeability across pinned, post-pinned, and lend-lease guns is the real gift of the Model 10.
