“Being a good politician has its perks” is a pretty clean way to let the punchline do the work without beating it to death. Reagan had the timing for that kind of line.

and that includes what I know of our drones too
China’s tech advances are impressive enough to make “substantially ahead” sound like an understatement. If their drone work is anywhere near that level, the rest of us may want to stop admiring the hardware and start reading the fine print on the firmware.
